Dr. Robert Axelrad, Brampton Dentist
Chances are that you’ve heard the term TMJ spoken in a dental office: But what do they mean?
TMJ stands for the temporomandibular joint, which connects the lower jaw (mandible) to the skull (temporal bone). When that joint is misaligned or damaged in any way, it can cause a countless number of health problems
– known as TMJ disorders.
TMJ disorders most commonly cause debilitating headaches, but also cause countless other problems, such as: dizziness, jaw stiffness, ear aches, ringing in the ears, eye pain, problems swallowing, teeth that don’t line up or touch when biting, neck pain and more.
Dr. Axelrad assesses and treats TMJ disorders of every kind, ranging from minor muscle spasms, to misaligned jaws that require temporary “splints” to stabilize a bite, to more serious damage caused from traumatic events (i.e. car accidents) that may require oral surgery.
Wondering if you have a TMJ disorder? Other TMJ symptoms, in addition to headaches and the painful maladies listed above, include a clicking sound in the jaw when a patient’s mouth opens; loss of hearing; dizziness and trouble balancing; or general ear congestion.
